I've been able to catch the "Supernanny" on TV these last few weeks and have been able to glean heaps of good tips and tricks to make life sweeter and avoid smacking and shouting. I've already incorporated the "reflection" spot (or step) that is easy enough and effective to diffuse a situation. It also gives me a chance to get a grip and gives them a breather to get perspective back. We also have a sticker chart for taking initiative whether getting ready for bed without being asked, being helpful and just general encouragement. Once they reach the end they get an extra special treat. I'm still formulating a "Love your brother" chart to encourage teamwork and brotherhood (a natural weakness) . I noticed that Jo Frost (Supernanny) according to the weakness of the child/children involved would have a slightly different system to encourage whatever behaviour.
She's great! I'm gonna add a link to her website which has all kinds of information on all these sorts of topics. Very readable and doable!
